L'istituzione della Diocesi di Ferentino risale alla fine del IV secolo: il primo Vescovo di Ferentino di cui si ha memoria fu Bassus (487 d.C.) ed è probabile che la Sede Vescovile fosse inizialmente ubicata presso la prima chiesa cristiana ferentinate, cioè Santa Maria Maggiore.

Questa nuova sede sull’Acropoli fu costruita nel duecento: risulta infatti nel Liber Censum che nel 1208 Papa Innocenzo III ricevette il giuramento di fedeltà dal fratello Riccardo (Conte di Sora) in "palatio episcopi Ferentini", e che nel 1220 il Vescovo Landolfo di Ferentino giudicò una controversia tra il Monastero di Villamagna ed il nobile Corrado di Sgurgola in "palatio novo Sanctorum Johannis e Paulis".

L' edificio sorge a filo delle mura romane, e si è ampliato e trasformato per via della centralità delle sue funzioni: oltre che sede dell'autorità religiosa, il palazzo divenne anche Curia del Rettore della Provincia di Campagna e Marittima, il cui lavoro era assicurare alla chiesa un controllo costante sui vari centri a sud di Roma.

Museo Diocesano: Istituito il 30 giugno 2011 con sede nell’Episcopio, espone opere provenienti da diversi luoghi di culto del territorio. L’allestimento propone la storia del Palazzo e delle sue funzioni, con documenti della Diocesi e del Rettore della Provincia di Campagna e Marittima.

Tra le raccolte una cronistoria di ritratti di vescovi, un archivio di documenti, carte geografiche, gli affreschi distaccati dalla chiesa di S. Andrea prima della demolizione e tele attribuite a Giuseppe Cesari, detto Cavalier D'Arpino, maestro di Guido Reni e Caravaggio.
In esposizione anche oreficeria, suppellettili sacre e paramenti liturgici dal XVII al XX secolo, tra cui la mitria di Celestino V.

Il Museo Diocesano fa parte del Sistema museale Integrato di Frosinone (SIF Cultura): con una tessera annuale è possibile accedere liberamente ad oltre 20 strutture.

ENG The institution of the Diocese of Ferentino dates back to the end of the fourth century: the first Bishop of Ferentino of which we have memory was Bassus (487 AD) and it is likely that the Episcopal See was initially located at the first Christian Church in Ferentino (Santa Maria Maggiore).

This new palace on the Acropolis was built in the 13th century: it is in fact written in the Liber Censum that in 1208 Pope Innocent III received the oath of loyalty from his brother Richard (Count of Sora) in "palatio episcopi Ferentini" and that in 1220 Bishop Landulf from Ferentino judged a dispute between the Monastery of Villamagna and the noble Conrad of Sgurgola in "palatio novo Sanctorum Johannis and Paulis".

The building stands flush with the Roman walls, but its appearance is very different from the original: in addition to being the seat of religious authority, the palace also became the seat of the Rector of the Province of Campagna and Marittima, whose work was to assure the church a constant control over the various centers outside Rome, so the building has undergone major upgrades.

Diocesan Museum: Established on 30 June 2011 with headquarters in the Episcopate, it exhibits pieces from various places of worship in the area, also proposing the history of the Palace and data about its religious and political functions.

Among the collections, a timeline of  bishops by portraits, ancient handwritten documents, geographical maps, the frescoes detached from the church of S. Andrea before its demolition and canvases attributed to Giuseppe Cesari, known as Cavalier D'Arpino, master of Guido Reni and Caravaggio.
Also on display: goldsmith's art, sacred furnishings and liturgical vestments from the 17th to the 20th century, including the miter (Bishop’s headdress) of Celestine V.
